Tips for Bringing Your Dog to a Photography Session

Most often I get asked “Can we bring our dog to the session?” and the answer is absolutely, yes! Having your engagement photos with pets is highly encouraged! Bringing your dog (or pet!) to a photography session can add a special touch to your family photos, capturing the joy and love of your entire family. Here are my top five tips for preparing your dog for a photo session and ensuring you all have a fun, stress-free experience.

1. Bring High-Value Treats

Dogs love treats, and high-value treats can be a lifesaver during a photography session. These treats are usually something extra special that your dog doesn’t get every day. They can help keep your dog’s attention, reward good behavior, and make the whole experience enjoyable for them. Think of them as bribery, but the good kind! Bacon, cheese, or specially made dog treats work wonders. My dogs will do anything for some chicken!

2. Bring Their Favorite Squeaky Toy

A favorite squeaky toy can help grab your dog’s attention and get those adorable perked-up ears and bright eyes. It’s also a great way to get them to look at the camera. Plus, a squeaky toy can serve as a familiar comfort item, helping your dog feel more relaxed and at ease during the session. Just be ready for some playful poses!

3. Exercise Them Beforehand

A tired dog is a well-behaved dog. Giving your pup a good workout before the session can help burn off excess energy, making them more calm and cooperative. Go for a long walk or have a vigorous play session before heading to the photoshoot. This way, they’re more likely to sit still and follow commands, rather than bouncing off the walls.

4. Bring a Friend to Help

Having an extra set of hands can make a huge difference. Bring along a friend or family member who can help manage your dog, hold leashes, or even entertain them while you’re getting some solo shots. This can help reduce stress for you and your partner, allowing you to focus on enjoying the moment and getting those perfect photos.

5. Wear Colors that Complement Your Dog’s Fur

Believe it or not, what you wear can impact how your photos turn out, especially with your dog in the picture. Choose outfits that complement your dog’s fur color. If your dog has dark fur, lighter colors can create a nice contrast. Conversely, if your dog has light fur, opt for darker or brighter colors. This ensures that both you and your dog look your best in the photos.
